Left 4 Dead creators hiring for "globally known game franchise"

Added: 03.07.2018 3:29 | 1173 views | 0 comments

The studio behind Left 4 Dead and Evolve, Turtle Rock Studios, is calling for a senior level designer to work on an “a globally known game franchise”. The listing calls for a candidate with “experience working with modern FPS engines” and on “a competitive first person shooter”, all which hint towards a new multiplayer series… our hopes are on a new Left 4 Dead but there is a lot to suggest it will be something quite different.
Turtle Rock Studios has a history of creating FPS games, after Left 4 Dead and Left 4 Dead 2 the studio created Evolve - the 4 v 1 monster hunting shooter. Evolve never found an audience after its launch in 2015, and it announced in 2016 that it was ceasing the development of the franchise including all bug fixes and content updates. The likelihood of another Evolve game seems pretty unlikely at this point given its cancellation, though not entirely impossible, especially if they want a second crack at reviving the series.

A senior level designer is not the only role the studio is seeking.

Project 1v1 Is A Quake III-Style Shooter With An Old-School Arcade Twist

Added: 02.07.2018 19:38 | 1267 views | 0 comments

Project 1v1 may look like a Quake III/Unreal Tournament-style FPS at first glance, but there’s more to it than just the opponent-gibbing action. As the title suggests, Project 1v1’s matches are limited to just two players, and play out on small and twisting maps full of ramps, jump pads, and the occasional insta-kill hazard. Whoever racks up the most frags in the allotted time wins. So far, so ‘90s.
However, Gearbox is adding a few interesting twists to the formula. The first is a queue of spectators, who can watch and comment on the match as it happens. Those onlookers aren’t just watching to boost your ego – whoever is at the top of the queue will be the next competitor to challenge the winner, and hopefully send them packing. This king-of-the-hill format is accentuated by Project 1v1’s HUD, which mirrors what you might find in an arcade fighting game, with the players’ health running in big bright bars across the top, along with their score (frags) and the remaining timer.

The other big twist is how weapons and abilities are handled. The characters you select in Project 1v1 (which sport exaggerated sci-fi art styles) are completely cosmetic and highly customizable, allowing you to tweak various pieces of clothing and ornaments you're wearing, as well as all of the color schemes. How your character actually functions in combat is instead dictated by your “deck,” which is comprised of a handful of cards. These cards cover both weapons (including the usual assortment of rocket launchers, shotguns, railguns, etc.), and abilities, which run the gamut from deployable turrets to speed boosts to a Pharah-style rocket barrage. Gearbox hasn’t worked out all the logistics behind the card packs, but players will be able to earn them through play, and they’ll contain a mix of the aforementioned weapons, abilities, and cosmetic items. Once you unlock a card, you’ll be able to use it in as many loadouts as you wish.
My hands-on demo of the game featured quick and tense matches that hearkened back to the early days of competitive shooters, and the three “decks” I tried featured considerably different abilities. Winning felt particularly good, in part because it meant I could keep on playing without waiting in line for another turn. Whether fans will want to queue up for a 1v1 shooter remains to be seen, but as you can probably surmise from the title and lack of screenshots, Project 1v1 is early in development and Gearbox is clearly still experimenting with the nascent shooter's formula.

I just finished replaying Extraction Point and enjoyed it a lot. This is one of the last FPSes made during the golden era of PC gaming. I ran it at “only” 2560x1440 with 2xTrSS as performance isn’t as good as the base game:

Call of Duty 2019 may have a campaign

Added: 02.07.2018 8:05 | 940 views | 0 comments

A job listing at Call of Duty: Modern Warfare developer Infinity Ward suggests that whatever comes after Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 will have a campaign mode. The next Call of Duty game, which is being developed by Treyarch Studios, releases later this year, and will have no campaign. However, it looks like the franchise will reintroduce a narrative element next year.

A job listing posted by Infinity Ward, whose last COD outing was 2016’s Infinite Warfare, offers a temporary posting for a narrative scripter at the studio’s California headquarters.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 4: release date, zombies, trailer, beta, gameplay - everything we know

Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 is the next title in Activision’s illustrious FPS series. It is set between the events of Black Ops 2 and 3, but marks a huge departure for Call of Duty in that it’s the first entry to not feature a traditional campaign. In its place is a battle royale mode called Blackout, which joins the core multiplayer and zombie mode to make it the most multiplayer-focused COD yet.
Owing to its setting, Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 promises a return to a near-future where drone warfare is commonplace - not quite boots on the ground, but not space warfare either. Working on the 15th instalment in the main series, and the first with a story arc to make it past three games (four if you count World at War), developer Treyarch will have a tough job shrugging off any series weariness while still appealing to hardcore Call of Duty players.
